GORD stands for Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease: 'gastro' refers to the stomach, 'oesophageal' refers to the oesophagus or gullet, the tube through which food passes from the mouth to the stomach, and 'reflux' means flowing back.
While many of us suffer from occasional acid-reflux problems (heartburn or indigestion), GORD sufferers actually have faulty control of a muscle at the top of their stomach, which allows harmful stomach acid to 'splash back' into the oesophagus or gullet, and can cause discomfort on a regular basis and in some cases extreme pain. Although GORD can be exacerbated by overeating and drinking too much, lifestyle choices in themselves do not cause the disease.
