  • Eat little and often and avoid large meals.
  • Eat early in the evening to allow plenty of time for your food to digest before going to bed.
  • Raise the head of the bed six to eight inches. This will help prevent the acid from being regurgitated up into your oesophagus.
  • Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol.
  • Avoid foods that you know from personal experience make the problem worse, these may include acidic fruit drinks, drinks that are too hot, spirits, fatty or spicy meals.
  • Avoid wearing tight belts or clothing.
  • Avoid bending down or lying flat after meals.
  • Don't smoke - smoking relaxes the muscles around the oesophagus making acid regurgitation more likely.
