You and your doctor
>Talking to your doctor

Your doctor may be very busy whenever you call or visit so it is wise to maximise the available time by making it as useful as possible. We can help to improve the consultation for both you and the doctor and to assist we have prepared a communication guide. The guide outlines techniques and questions that will help you get the assistance you feel you need.

Before you visit your doctor prepare yourself to:

  • Describe what symptoms you have got and how they are affecting you.
  • Mention if there have been any major changes in your life or health.
  • Ask the key questions that you want answers to.

You should mention your concerns at the beginning of your appointment, as if you wait until the end there is less likely to be time to discuss your concerns. You can write a list, or use the patient diary to help you gather the information.

Be as accurate as possible when describing your symptoms or concerns e.g.

Vague: "My heartburn is still here."

Accurate: "My heartburn is less frequent during the day, but it still wakes me two or more times a week at night."

Tell your doctor how your symptoms affect your lifestyle, e.g. sleep, eating or the ability to work.

If you don''t understand what your doctor tells you, don''t be afraid to ask for further explanation. Your doctor wants you to understand your condition.

When you see your doctor again, let him/her know how you feel about your care, if you have concerns about your current treatment ask about alternative treatments. If you are not entirely happy with your medication e.g. if it does not work well or makes you feel poorly, tell your doctor. Similarly if everything is satisfactory you could let your doctor know and thank him/her for the treatment or advice.
