I studied at the University of Nottingham and graduated with a MSci (Hons) degree in Chemistry.
In my final year of University I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in chemistry and in particular organic chemistry. I applied to AstraZeneca through the graduate recruitment process and was invited for an interview for Process Chemistry. I had my second round interview at Charnwood and was really impressed by the enthusiasm of the chemists I met and the excellent facilities.
As a process chemist I work in a project based environment, interacting closely with the other main functions within Process Research and Development ; Analytical Chemistry, Process Engineering and Development Manufacture. My main role is to develop chemical processes, which are safe, efficient, cost effective and environmentally considerate against the time constraints of the drug development process. These processes must eventually support the long term manufacture of the active drug substance.
Day to day the majority of my time is spent in planning, carrying out, analysing and documenting experiments to develop the process, usually in preparation for a manufacturing campaign, where material is made to support toxicological studies and clinical trials.
These campaigns range from hundreds of grams to hundreds of kilograms depending on the stage of development. During the manufacturing campaigns I act as a trouble shooter for any problems, which may occur with the scale up of the process. I get a real sense of satisfaction when the chemistry scales up well and when it doesnt, I enjoy the challenge of understanding why it hasnt.
Problem solving is a key part of the development of a process and I really enjoy this, whether it is through laboratory work, reviewing the chemical literature or talking to colleagues.
Through my work I have been exposed to a vast range of chemistry and new technologies. The facilities, technical expertise and support within the Process Chemistry department are excellent.
I have been encouraged to continue to learn through keeping up to date with current literature and attending both internal and external seminars and conferences. There is a strong commitment to training and courses are readily available to improve both technical and personal skills.
I recently completed a six month secondment to Development Manufacture where I was involved in both the planning and carrying out of manufacturing campaigns on 25-50 L scale. This was a fantastic opportunity for me in terms of both my personal and professional development. It is great that flexibility and support was there to allow me to undertake a secondment.
AstraZeneca has given me a career that allows me to be challenged and to learn. I find the drug development process fascinating and it is a good feeling to know that the work you do does make a difference.
