About Engineers

Engineers design, build and maintain the buildings and equipment needed to create and produce safe, effective medicines.

"AstraZeneca invests heavily in equipment and facilities so engineers get the chance to become involved in some pretty big and exciting projects."

What does the job involve?

Engineers help create new facilities such as research laboratories and manufacturing plants and also maintain and improve existing ones, ensuring they comply with all the regulatory requirements. They need to successfully manage contractors, suppliers and internal resources to deliver projects on time and within budget. Engineers also need to be alert to developments in technology that they can exploit to improve processes.

What kind of qualifications do I need?

There are two main ways to become an Engineer with AstraZeneca. You can apply to us once you"ve completed a degree in engineering. Some students spend a year with us as part of the "Year in Industry Scheme" before going to university. We sponsor some of these and keep in touch with them while they"re studying. We also offer an Engineering Apprenticeship scheme to young people who achieve grades A-C in core subjects at GCSE or at different stages in their education post-GCSE. The scheme offers academic as well as "on the job" qualifications.

What kind of career opportunities will I enjoy?

Graduate Engineers can progress to become Chartered Engineers under schemes registered with the Institute of Electrical Engineers and Institute of Mechanical Engineers. Typically, this takes about four to five years. Once they"ve obtained chartered status, they can broaden their careers by taking up roles in manufacturing, purchasing, logistics or the supply chain. Apprentice Engineers can progress to become Engineering Technicians, responsible for the maintenance and improvement of our facilities. In time, they can move into project and maintenance management roles. There are also opportunities to take a part-time degree and become a Chartered Engineer.

Where can I work
