Dr John Patterson, of AstraZeneca, has been named as the
President Designate of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry
(ABPI).Dr Patterson will take over from the current ABPI President,
Bill Fullagar, of Novartis, in April next year. He will serve for a two-year
term."This is a very exciting time to be in the health care industry
; a time when more money is being promised by the government to tackle years of
under funding in the NHS, but when too many patients are still not receiving
the modern medicines they need," said Dr Patterson. For the past year, Dr Patterson has led the ABPI task force
focusing on access to medicines. "Despite all good intentions, the National
Institute for Clinical Excellence has still not achieved either faster access
to modern medicines or the end of postcode prescribing. I am hopeful that this
situation will change over the forthcoming period, and I look forward to
helping the pharmaceutical industry to play its part in these and other
improvements to UK patient care," he said.Dr Patterson graduated in medicine from the University of
Manchester in 1971 and was subsequently elected to fellowship of the Royal
College of Physicians and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine. He has worked
for 26 years in the pharmaceutical industry, having joined ICI as medical
adviser in its clinical research department. He joined the Board of ICI Pharmaceuticals as medical director
in 1990, and has since held commercial positions on the executive team of
Zeneca, now AstraZeneca. Before the AstraZeneca merger, he was responsible for
all the Zeneca businesses outside the USA and is currently responsible for
strategic marketing, portfolio management and licensing. He is also a
non-executive director of Amersham plc.
