AstraZeneca UK donates computers to local schools

AstraZeneca UK Sales and Marketing Company has demonstrated its commitment to the community by donating more than 200 computers to local schools.

AstraZeneca UK Sales and Marketing Company has demonstrated its commitment to the community by donating more than 200 computers to local schools.

More than 100 schools in the Kings Langley and Luton and Dunstable catchment areas were contacted and offered computers. To date 70 schools in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire have been given computers with each school receiving a minimum of three computers. All the computers available have been allocated and distribution will be completed by the end of the October.

Bev Salt, President, AstraZeneca UK Sales and Marketing Company, commenting on the scheme said: "AstraZeneca has already established links with schools in the local community via the Schools Science Prize*. We believe strongly in supporting education and felt that schools would benefit from the computer donation."

Parkfields Middle School, Dunstable, Bedfordshire is one of many schools who have benefited from the donation and the Headmaster David Calcott commented: "The offer of computers from AstraZeneca was a very kind gesture. Limited budgets mean that we cannot always afford to purchase all the IT resources that we need. The three computers donated have been installed in the Science Laboratory and the Numeracy and Literacy Rooms and are being used by pupils. Parkfields Middle School participates in the School Science Prize and is grateful for the grant of c. £500 that it receives from AstraZeneca."

Other schools have expressed similar sentiments. Mr Chris Blanch, Head of Science, Marlborough School, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire said: "Thank you so much for the donation of the three computers. With the rapid expansion of the school in recent years, these will be a valuable resource for both pupils and staff. This donation has been warmly appreciated by all the Science Faculty."

The scheme was co-ordinated by the PR, IT and Facilities Departments within AstraZeneca. "Because of limited office space, all the old computers were stored off site. Before despatching them to schools, we had to bring them to our offices and hire an engineer to clean them up so as to ensure that they were in good working order," explained Dave Griffin, Infrastructure Manger, IT, AstraZeneca.
