Safety Theme Inspires 3,000 Primary School Children

Over 3,000 children from primary schools in the Macclesfield and Congleton Boroughs accepted AstraZeneca's invitation to enter the company's annual Calendar Competition this year. They were asked to submit a picture for each month of 2003, illustrating the theme of 'Safety: Any Time, Any Place, Anywhere'.

Overall competition winner was Ashdene Primary School pupil Natalie Wride. She received a £50 gift voucher and the company has donated £600 towards school funds.

All the other eleven winning pupils received a £25 gift voucher and their schools received £200 towards school funds. In addition, every winner received a framed copy of their entry and a certificate.

Pictures selected by a team of eight judges will form the basis of a calendar for Cheshire-based AstraZeneca employees to use in their workplaces and some of the other designs will be displayed around the company's premises to help promote safety issues. A quantity of calendars will also be sent to all local primary and secondary schools with which AstraZeneca's education liaison department has forged links.

The winners, their parents and teachers were invited to a prize-giving lunch at AstraZeneca's Alderley Park site, hosted by Site General Manger Mr Will Spinks.

Mr. Spinks said: "This is the fourth year we have sponsored a Calendar Competition and we are delighted that it has proved so popular. We had nearly twice as many entries this year as last and the children's lively drawings will ensure that our employees give the calendar pride of place. In return, we hope that the information sent out with the entry forms helped teachers to remind children of the need to act safely, whether in school or at home".
