Children from the Chelford Primary School are now benefiting
from the recent restoration of the village pond that is adjacent to their
school.A donation of £1,000 from AstraZeneca has funded the
viewing and dipping platforms at the pond. The platforms will enable the school
to take advantage of the pond and surrounding area for practical work linked to
their environmental studies. The pond is set in a small area of parkland that was once the
garden of a large Victorian house called Mere Court. The area had become very
overgrown and in need of attention. A group of volunteers from Chelford village helped with the
project but the main technical and manpower support was from the BTCV (British
Trust for Conservation Volunteers). New substantial wooden fences have been
erected, old paths cleared and some new paths created, trees have been pruned
and the whole area tidied.Jane Conquer, Vice Chairman of Chelford Parish Council, said,
"We would like to thank AstraZeneca who have been extremely generous in their
support of this project. Without their help we would not have been able to
provide this educational facility. It is hoped that this pond will be
appreciated as an area for quiet contemplation by generations of Chelford
village people, both now and in the future". Wendy Priest, Community Relations Officer for AstraZeneca said,
"We are delighted to support the restoration of Chelford pond which will
benefit the children and people of Chelford village for years to come. The
children are already having fun examining the wildlife at the pond as part of
their school environmental studies".Ends
