Saving energy to help the environment

Did you know that a single computer monitor left switched on during the night wastes enough energy to laser print 800 A4 size pages?
Did you know that a single computer monitor left switched on during the night wastes enough energy to laser print 800 A4 size pages?

A leading local company has set out its stall to get staff 'switched on to switching off' so that energy can be saved to help protect the environment. The aim at AstraZeneca R & D Charnwood, Loughborough's medicines research company, is to reduce the use of electricity this year by three per cent and a poster campaign is being used at the Loughborough facility to make staff aware of the project.

A spokeswoman for the company's Safety Health and Environment department said: "What we want is for lights and equipment to be turned off when not needed. It is easy to waste electric power - for instance, leaving a photocopier on overnight uses enough energy to make no less than 5,300 copies and just leaving a window open loses enough to produce 130 milk bottles!"

"We are keeping an ongoing watch on the situation but we are expecting that staff here at AstraZeneca will appreciate the need to save energy and thereby help the environment and will support the campaign."
