A £25,000 gift from AstraZeneca has launched a fund which
should bring even better and quicker breast screening for women in Macclesfield
and East Cheshire. MAST, the hospital charity, aims to raise the £70,000
needed for an extra ultra sound machine in the radiology department this year.
The cheque was handed by Chris Petty of AstraZeneca to MP Nick
Winterton, who said: "It is super to have a company so involved in the
community." Chris said: "We are delighted to make this donation. Not only
will it be valuable to women throughout the region, we have many employees and
their families who will also benefit from the state of the art machine."
Mike Crotch-Harvey, director of the breast screening unit at
Macclesfield Hospital, said the new machine will be extremely good. It gives
better definition from the scans, answers more questions and allows more
accurate diagnosis. Because it will be additional to the existing equipment,
East Cheshire women should expect shorter waiting times and more prompt
investigation when they are referred to the unit. Consultant radiologist Chris Loughran said: "We are very
grateful to AstraZeneca for their generosity. East Cheshire is already among
the best areas in the country for the uptake of breast screening. This will
make us even better." Michele Parks, MAST co-ordinator, has set an autumn target to
reach the £70,000. For further information, contact the MAST office on
