With many traditional events around the country cancelled
because of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease, one local favourite which
has drawn the crowds to Loughborough every May Day for more than 20 years will
go-ahead as usual. The annual Loughborough Lions Charity Carnival will be at
Southfields Park on May 7 with many exciting attractions lined up.Over the years the event has raised thousands of pounds for
local charities and voluntary organisations and the Lions are hoping that this
year will be a record event.Once again the main sponsor is Loughborough's medicines research
company AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood, who are donating £2,000 to ensure
it is again a popular success."The foot and mouth epidemic has meant many local people have
cancelled holidays and outings and will be staying at home on this May Day
holiday," said Simon Waller, President of Loughborough Lions. "What better way
of beating the gloom than coming along to Southfields Park and enjoying some
spectacular shows plus the ever popular fun fair, craft show, car boot sales
and the many stalls set up by local charities and voluntary
groups?""Not only will this be an enjoyable outing for all the family,
it will raise much needed cash for worthwhile causes," he said. "We are very
grateful to AstraZeneca for again sponsoring us, the sixth year the company has
done so. Each year we try to make the carnival better than the previous one and
Loughborough Lions believe that this year's will be the best ever.""It promises to be a great day out and we are looking for a
bumper crowd to come along and enjoy the show."Ends
