Charities receive laptops from local pharmaceutical company

Over twenty charities in the Luton and Dunstable area received second-hand laptops from the global pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca.
Over twenty charities in the Luton and Dunstable area received second-hand laptops from the global pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca.

AstraZeneca contacted charities in the Luton and Dunstable informing them of their intention to provide laptops. Following a positive response the company began distribution, refurbishing each laptop prior to donation.

Dreamflight, a Buckinghamshire based charity who organise an annual overseas trip for children with severe illnesses, commented, "The laptops from AstraZeneca will be a great help to us," said Penny Wright, Office Manager. "It now means our Medical Director can have instant and easy access to children's medical records. This is particularly important when we are taking the children on overseas trips and carrying paper records is not always practical."

Bev Salt, President, AstraZeneca UK Marketing Company, commented on the scheme: "AstraZeneca believe strongly in supporting the local community and are delighted to provide some support through donating the second-hand laptops to these charitable organisations."

Sister Antoinette of Luton based Noah Enterprise which delivers outreach training services and support to homeless young people, commented, "The computers will be put into use straight away at our training centre. Many of the students who attend our courses are trying to rebuild their lives. Providing an opportunity to acquire new skills, such as word processing, will be a real help when they face the challenge of finding work." Sister Antoinette continued, "The laptops will enable us to expand our training provision and work in the local community."

AstraZeneca is a member of the Luton Lives Business Action Group, a collective of local companies committed to community action. "By working with Luton Lives, we were able to identify quickly and effectively which charities had a specific need for this type of donation," said Nicki, project co-ordinator. "Luton Lives provides a valuable information resource, which in turn helps us make sure we can deliver maximum benefit through our community relations programme."

AstraZeneca employs over 10,000 people throughout the UK, of whom 1,800 work for the UK Marketing Company which has its headquarters at Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. The company will be relocating to Luton in October 2001 where approximately 500 of its employees will be based.
