Kev's smile wins him a new phone!

Local Kinch's bus driver Kevin Beale has made many friends as he drives his number 7 route vehicle around the town - and he has a brand new mobile phone to prove it!
Local Kinch's bus driver Kevin Beale has made many friends as he drives his number 7 route vehicle around the town - and he has a brand new mobile phone to prove it!

The route runs during peak hours linking the railway station to the town centre, the university and the edge of town Derby Road industrial area which includes the medicines research and development company AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood.

AstraZeneca, who partly sponsor the route decided to recognise drivers who went out of their way to make passengers feel welcome and enjoy their trips with a twice-yearly award judged on the number of nominations a driver receives from staff at the company.

Kevin won the inaugural AstraZeneca Bus Driver Award choosing a new mobile phone as his prize which was presented to him at a special lunch held at AstraZeneca attended by members of the company's Green Commuting Team and Keith Shayshutt, head of Development for Kinch's.

Kev received some glowing nominations from AstraZeneca bus travellers who told of his helpfulness, punctuality, friendly and funny attitude, best summed up by the worker who said: "Cheerful Kev always has a smile on his face. He is a driver who chats and makes me laugh on the way home which is a great tonic, especially after a stressful day."

The innovative award scheme is not the only way AstraZeneca is improving travelling to work. Cyclists will soon have new shower and changing facilities and now the company is considering ways of reducing the number of 'single occupancy vehicles' with car sharing, walking, buses and motor cycles coming under the spotlight.
