One of the high-spots of next Monday's 'Streets Alive' carnival
in Loughborough's Market Place is music from one of the best jazz ensembles in
the country. The Grand Union Orchestra from London is sending around half of
its talented musicians to perform a wide range of music in the popular
carnival, one of the biggest draws in the Loughborough calendar. The Orchestra,
usually 18 strong, is often referred to as a jazz ensemble but, said Kevin Ryan
of Charnwood Arts, it actually provides a much wider spectrum of
music."The Great Union Orchestra often uses some unusual instruments
and spectators can expect a fusion of world music," he said. "Wherever they
play, they attract large audiences and their work is always popular and well
received. The whole Orchestra will be in town next year to give a performance
and the music people will hear at the 'Streets Alive' carnival next Monday
will, I am sure, provide the sort of taster which will make them want to see
the whole ensemble."The visit is part of the recently announced year long 'Dr
Carnival' project organised by Charnwood Arts and funded partly by the
AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood 'Arts in the Community' Scheme. The company has
donated £12,000 to the three year scheme alongside a grant from Arts and
Business New Partners Scheme which has agreed to donate a further
£15,000. 'Streets Alive' is funded by Charnwood Borough Council and
programmed by Charnwood Arts. For more information visit www.charnwood-arts.org.ukEnds
