One of the most colourful events in the Loughborough calendar -
the Mela Festival - takes place in Southfields Park on Sunday, August 5, and is
again expected to be a crowd-puller.This year's Mela includes a wide variety of family entertainment
including a 'mini-mela' for the children, art and craft workshops, many stalls
and, of course, traditional music and dancing from several ethnic
groups.Organisers have been helped on their way to staging the event
with a £500 donation from local company AstraZeneca R&D
Charnwood."This year, we expect to have more than 100 performers plus the
stalls and hope to attract more than the 3,000 visitors who came last year,"
said Cath Walker of the Mela Committee. "We aim to have entertainment from many
cultures and communities, all with the aim of promoting harmony.""We are very grateful to AstraZeneca for its generous donation
and hope that it will spur other local companies and groups to come forward to
help with the cost of holding what has become one of the most important and
eagerly awaited events of the Loughborough year."Ends
