The workload of a vital local charity which gives help and
advice to families with young children, has increased so much that it has had
to move to larger premises on Derby Road.Started in 1978, Home-Start Charnwood with eight permanent
staff, currently supports around 100 families through a network of 60 trained
volunteers. These work alongside families and young mothers who have at least
one child under the age of five years providing confidential help in times of
stress caused by a wide variety of problems.Scheme Manager, Brenda Burgess said "The purchase of the new
premises was covered by a grant from the Community Fund, previously known as
the National Lotteries Charity Board, but one of the most urgent needs was an
improved communications system. Loughborough's medicines research company,
AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood came to our aid and donated the £1,600
needed, and we are extremely grateful to the company for its generous help. If
AstraZeneca had not helped, the old telephone system, which was already
straining under the workload, would have threatened to compromise the absolute
confidentiality we give. The state-of-the art telephone system enables us to offer a much
better service to those we support. We would like to hear from anyone who has
time to spare and is keen to help. No previous experience is needed and
training will be given. If you are interested , call Home-Start on 01509
