One of Loughborough's best known local companies has become a
patron of Hathern Band, one of the best brass bands in the
Midlands. The band has a total of more than 100 players ranging from
experienced musicians to absolute beginners. Members, who meet twice weekly in
the band's own headquarters in Hathern, play a wide range of music to delight
their many fans. "It's not just marches," said band secretary and player Lesley
Bentley. " We also include popular tunes from shows and films, jazz and big
band and classical pieces. Our senior band competes at national level but we
have always supported the youngsters and have a youth band which primarily
consists of players aged from 9 to 17 years and also competes in national
competitions, and a training band providing tuition for the 6 plus age
group.""We are very grateful to AstraZeneca for its patronage. We are
largely self-supporting and, when you consider that even the cheapest
instrument can cost around £700 and a new tuba £5,000, donations
such as this are much appreciated," said Lesley Bentley.AstraZeneca's Public Relations Manager Gill Hilsdon said
"Hathern Band perform not just enjoyable music but also play a prominent role
in local life especially in its teaching of music and instruments to the
younger groups."
