The company notified the Department of Health (DoH) in accordance with the Best Practice Guidelines for product discontinuations. AstraZeneca UK also communicated its intention to Purchasing Pharmacists, Internet-based drug information services (i.e., Drug Info Zone) and relevant pharmaceutical press.
Since this announcement, AstraZeneca UK has been in contact with healthcare professionals, patient groups and the Department of Health (DoH) and has reaffirmed its commitment to patients with CNS disorders. In acting on that commitment, and in recognising the importance that Mysoline plays in the lives of patients with epilepsy and essential tremor, AstraZeneca UK has confirmed that it will be able to extend the supply of Mysoline until at least August 2004.
Furthermore, AstraZeneca UK is aggressively pursuing other opportunities that will allow us to divest Mysoline to an alternative manufacturer to ensure the continued supply of Mysoline for patients in the UK.
While no immediate action is required on the part of healthcare professionals, AstraZeneca UK is steadfast in its responsibility to keeping specialists, GPs, pharmacists, the DoH and patient groups informed of this issue as we work toward a patient focused resolution.
