Promoting Science and Education in the Community.

Through producing new medicines, AstraZeneca - one of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies - improves human health and enhances people's lives.

As part of our commitment as a global business to high standards of social responsibility, we place great importance on the good relationships with our local communities around the world. One of the key aspects of this is our Education Liaison Policy in the UK.

We believe in promoting the value of science in the community and in particular among young people. We support science at all levels with a range of programmes - both national and local - aimed at encouraging the scientists of the future. Our UK Education Liaison Network of representatives from our major sites has a range of responsibilities including developing our policy and supporting education liaison activities, with particular emphasis on science and technology.

Our policy includes support for government initiatives such as work experience in a variety of areas, providing science teaching tools and training programmes, competitions, science events and seminars, working directly with schools, 'hands-on' activities at school science clubs, and employees being involved as school governors.

AstraZeneca sponsors the CREativity in Science and Technology (CREST) AWARDS for the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science) encouraging project work, problem solving and communication skills in students aged 11-19. Over 20,000 students a year take part in the BA CREST across the UK, many of whom attend regional celebrations, the best projects compete in the national BA CREST Science Fair.

There is also the AstraZeneca Science Teaching Trust, an independent charity, with a total trust fund of  £20 million, supporting a programme of projects designed to help build the knowledge, skills and understanding required to lead and teach science effectively and confidently in primary schools.
