As the second-largest employer in Loughborough, AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood acknowledges its responsibility both to the 1,200 employees on site and the local community in which it operates.

Charnwood assigns a high priority to all Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) matters. SHE measures underline all our activities and annual objectives and targets ensure continuous improvement. The site holds the internationally recognised ISO14001 Environmental Management Standard.

In addition, our comprehensive occupational health service and new site fitness facility supports staff well-being.

With a large workforce we are mindful about the impact our travel movements have on the local environment. Our commuter travel plan includes a car-sharing scheme, facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, and access to local public transport information on our intranet.

We actively support many local organisations that give valuable services to the Borough of Charnwood. Our community strategy has 11 diverse programmes of activity for staff involvement. They include education activities, voluntary work, and charitable donations.

Our programmes fall under two broad headings:

• Partnering a School
• Community Support

Under Partnering a School our efforts are focused on the following themes:

• Raising the level of educational attainment for young people up to the age of 13 years
• Encouraging knowledge of and interest in science among young people between 13 and 16 years old
• Promoting career opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry to 16-18 year olds, and to university students

Under Community Support our aims are to:

• Support initiatives to improve the health and well-being of the community
• Enable our staff to develop and share their skills, time and enthusiasm with the community.
